Ingredients
Behentrimonium methosulfate: BTMS (Behentrimonium methosulphate) is derived from Rapeseed oil. BTMS (for short) is a conditioning emulsifier. Specially created for hair, BTMS smoothes your tresses and enables the water in your shower to mix with the ingredients in your bar to create a delicious conditioner.
Vegetable glycerine: Glycerine/Glycerin/Glycerol is derived from coconut flesh. Glycerine is a humectant- this means it draws water to itself. We use it to hydrate your skin and hair without oil or waxes. Our glycerine is palm free and comes from sustainably managed coconuts, a renewable resource. Glycerine can come from many sources, petroleum and palm being common, which of course, we don't use!
Brassica alcohol: In our constant quest for more sustainable alternatives, we came across brassica alcohol. A certified palm-free alternative to fatty alcohols (which are almost exclusively derived from palm oil (ours are not though!) Fatty alcohols are moisturisers, barrier builders and structurants, so they help our bars stay firm, provide hydration and prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) which causes dry skin.
Not to be confused with alcohol (ethanol) which are drying. The two are not similar.
Theobroma cacao (cocoa) butter: Cocoa butter is derived from Cocoa beans. It's both an emollient (softening/hydrating ingredient) and thickener. Cocoa butter is completely natural, sustainably sourced and totally biodegradable. It's also a fantastic moisturiser, forms a great protective barrier on the skin and smells incredible! Our cocoa butter comes from a variety of different sources and it's an ingredient we are working on better sources for. One of these sources is the CONACADO cooperative in the Dominican Republic whom TradeAid work with. The Cocoa butter supply chain is filled with child labour and we are working on ensuring ours is completely free of it.
Cocos nucifera (coconut) oil: Coconut oil is derived from coconut flesh. Coconut oil has reached cult status and we love it. It's super nourishing for hair and skin, without being heavy or overly greasy. Our coconut oil comes from a womens cooperative in Samoa. They produce delicious organic, virgin coconut oil from small producers all around Samoa. Purchasing their oil ensures we pay a fair price for their product and that the money is reinvested back into their communities and environment.
Benzyl alcohol: Benzyl alcohol is derived from Benzel chloride. It's a preservative. Many people are unnecessarily frightened of preservatives. They are very necessary to prevent bacterial or fungal infections which can cause serious issues, particularly in those with broken skin. We use our preservative in concentrations less than 0.4% which is both very safe and very effective. Benzyl alcohol is completely biodegradable and is naturally occurring in many fruits and plants such as jasmine and ylang ylang. Whilst high concentrations of benzyl alcohol can cause irritation, we use less than 0.4% in our bars.
Panthenol (Vitamin B5): Vitamin B5 is derived from Molasses or sugar.
Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (guar) gumDehydroacetic acid: Dehydroacetic acid is derived from Acetic acid (Vinegar). It's a preservative. Many people are unnecessarily frightened of preservatives. They are very necessary to prevent bacterial or fungal infections which can cause serious issues, particularly in those with broken skin. We use our preservative in concentrations less than 0.4% which is both very safe and very effective. Dehydroacetic acid is completely biodegradable and is known to be exceptionally mild but effective with a low irritation potential.
